Eleanor Holmes Norton
Eleanor Holmes Norton, 88, a nonvoting congressional representative for DC since 1991, has signaled that she will not be seeking re-election.
Politico reports that on Sunday, Norton’s campaign filed a termination notice with the Federal Election Commission, “essentially signaling an end to her campaign.”
The news comes following reports concerning her mental acuity following an incident last fall when a police report revealed Norton showed “early stages of dementia.”
The Gateway Pundit reported that, according to two police reports obtained by NBC Washington, Norton was scammed by people claiming to be duct and fireplace cleaners.
The thieves posing as HVAC workers entered Holmes Norton’s home, accessed her credit cards, and charged her $4,400 for work they did not do.
The police report described Eleanor Holmes Norton as having dementia. It also revealed that her caretaker has a power of attorney.
“Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (DC), 88 years old, Black Woman, suffers from the early stages of dementia,” the police report said.
A spokeswoman for Eleanor Holmes Norton pushed back on the claims in the police report.
“The medical diagnosis included in the police report was based on an assumption the reporting officer was unqualified to make. Furthermore, Congresswoman Norton doesn’t have a caretaker.”
“A longtime employee and friend serves as the house manager, residing at a separate address,” the statement said.
The National Review’s Jim Geraghty noted that following the incident, “Norton was not made available for interviews to dispel the claim that she suffered from dementia.”
In a devastatingly illustrative sentence, the New York Times wrote, “It was not clear whether Washington’s 88-year-old veteran delegate, who has been in declining health but has insisted she would seek re-election, was aware of the filing.” You can’t ask the delegate if she was aware, because she hasn’t granted an interview.”
Former acting Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair Donna Brazile threw Norton under the bus in September, urging her not to run for reelection.
“She is no longer the dynamo she once was, at a time when D.C. needs the kind of energetic representation in Congress she provided for decades,” Brazile wrote in an op-ed.
Brazile served as Norton’s campaign manager during her first campaign in 1990 and stayed on as her chief of staff for eight years.
