The iconic french film star Brigitte Bardot has died aged 91.
Bardot passed away Sunday at her home in southern France, according to Bruno Jacquelin of the Brigitte Bardot Foundation for the protection of animals.
No cause of death was disclosed, altough had been hospitalized last month.
Bardot was one of most recognizable sex symbols of the 1960s before reinventing herself as an animal rights and right-wing activist.
Her notable films include And God Created Woman (1956), In Case of Misfortune (1958), The Truth (1960), Contempt (1963), A Ravishing Idiot (1964), Shalako (1968), The Bear and the Doll (1970), and Don Juan (1973).
French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to her, saying she embodied a “life of freedom.”
“Her films, her voice, her dazzling beauty, her work, her sorrows, her generous passion for animals, her face that became Marianne, Brigitte Bardot embodied a life of freedom.
“French existence, universal brilliance. She touched us. We mourn a legend of the century.”

The movie star and anti-immigration activist Brigitte Bardot has passed away at the age of 91.
She was convicted 6 times by the French state between 1997 and 2008 for criticising mass-immigration and Islamism.

While her real passion was for animals, Bardot was also known for her hardline right-wing views and her vociferous support for conservative opposition leader Marine Le-Pen.
Jordan Bardella, who now leads Le Pen’s National Rally party and is expected to be their candidate in the next presidential election said her “beauty stunned the world.”
“Brigitte Bardot was a woman of heart, conviction, and character,” he wrote.
“Fervent patriot, lover of animals whom she protected all her life, she alone embodied an entire French era, but also and above all a certain idea of courage and freedom.”
