The Green Party’s Mehreen Faruqi Faced Down by Sky News Over Antisemitism Hypocrisy at Bondi Vigil

In the aftermath of the horrific attack carried out against Jewish beachgoers who were celebrating Hanukkah in Sydney, Australia,  Sky News reporter Sharri Markson confronted Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi on her long history of anti-semitic behavior when she showed up for a performative attendance at a memorial.

As reported by The Daily Mail, two men stepped out of a vehicle on Campbell Parade, near Bondi Pavilion, and opened fire at Bondi Beach at roughly 6.40 pm on Sunday. Witnesses report that more than 30 shots were fired.

More than 40 people were injured in the attack, and at least 15 were killed.

Australian authorities have confirmed that the victims killed range in age from 10 to 87 and include a ten-year-old girl and a Holocaust survivor.

In 2023, Faruqi posted (and later deleted) a photo on social media showing herself smiling beside a placard depicting an Israeli flag in a rubbish bin with the slogan “Keep the world clean.”

In 2024, Faruqi publicly condemned Australian universities for adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism, calling it “dangerous, politicised and unworkable.”

Faruqi has repeatedly attended and spoken at pro-Palestine rallies where signs depicted Jews as animals (e.g., pigs and monkeys) or called for violence against Jews. A 2019 report highlighted Green-associated events worsening issues with “Israel and Jews,” including undeniable antisemitic signage.

On the anniversary of the October 7, 2023, attacks, Faruqi wore a keffiyeh (a symbol associated with Palestinian nationalism) in Parliament while questioning the Race Discrimination Commissioner about “far-right groups” provoking racism. Critics accused her of inciting hatred toward Jews by draping herself in a symbol linked to anti-Israel sentiment on a day of mourning for Jewish victims.

Markson asked Faruqi, “Haven’t you only fueled the anti-semitism crisis with your aggressive rhetoric over the past two years?”

A subdued Faruqi, noticeably not donning the keffiyeh she often sports, replied in an emotionless drone, “We are here today to mourn all those who have been unforgivably, unforgivably, killed. We are here giving respect to the community.”

Markson pushed on, “You have been at Palestinian protests where they have called for the intifada. You have been at pro-Palestinian protests where there have been calls to intifada and death to the IDF. How does this lead to anything else other than the terror attack we saw last night?”

Unable to actually address her abhorrent behavior, Faruqi repeated her prior comment, “We are here giving respect…” before Markson pushed back.

“Do you regret being at those pro-Palestinian protests that have only fueled anti-semitism?” Markson pressed.

“Today is about heart and humanity for those who have lost their loved ones, for those who have been injured,” Faruqi replied, although her tone was devoid of emotion.

“Are you surprised? You can’t possibly be surprised that your actions have been among those that have led to this.  Would you like to apologize? To the Jewish community?” Markson asked.

Faruqi, unable to justify her behavior, continued to repeat herself, “I am here to provide support to the Jewish community and everyone else….”

“Would you like to apologize?” Markson interrupted.

“….and everyone else who has suffered, suffered what has happened here yesterday, that’s what I am here for.”

What appear to be Faruqi staffers then block the reporter from continuing to question her.
