Radical socialist NYC Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has made his disdain for police well-known. He has underscored that position with the appointment of Professor Alex Vitale to his transition team.
Vitale, who has pushed for ending policing and calling police ‘violence workers,’ is being tapped to shape ‘community safety issues.
Vitale announced on X, “I’m excited to announce that I have been asked to join the Mamdani Transition Team to work on community safety issues. A New Era for NYC.”

In 2017, Vitale authored “The End of Policing,” where he asserts that police don’t exist to help citizens and argues for an end to traditional policing for certain criminal activity. According to Vitale, police should not address narcotics use, prostitution, patrolling borders, and “misbehaving adolescents.”
In a 2020 interview, he called police “violence workers” who can not be reformed.
“The whole point is they’re violence workers. You can’t train them not to be violence workers.”
He further argues in the book that police should also refrain from combating street gangs, claiming that gang units are “racist,” and has called for abolishing the NYPD Gang Database.
In 2024, Vitale shared on X, “We’re working to abolish the NYPD Gang Database and end abusive gang suppression policing.”

Per Fox News:
“In most cities, gang units function as a mechanism for racialized social control,” the book says in chapter five. “Black and Latino youth are labeled as gang members for hanging out together, while white youth groups are dismissed as harmless.”
Policing borders is also racist, according to the author.
“The expansion of Border Patrol powers has been justified through fear and racism. It legitimizes xenophobic narratives that define immigrants as threats rather than as fellow workers or neighbors,” the book says in chapter six.
