A large digital billboard at Lakewood Towne Center in Lakewood, Washington, was hacked on Tuesday evening and used to display a series of explicit, sexually charged memes that mocked the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
The hacked content was visible for several hours to passing traffic and shoppers.
The memes included Kirk photoshopped in a near-kiss with slain rapper XXXTentacion, the conservative icon edited to appear to be kissing cartoon characters with rainbow flags behind them, a sex toy “challenge” with Kirk’s image, and other strange pictures mocking his life and death.
The images also mocked Kirk’s grieving wife, Erika.
The hack displayed an obviously false claim that it was paid for by Kirk’s organization, Turning Point USA, and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).
This public desecration of a murdered American patriot was broadcast on a highway-visible screen for families, kids, and shoppers to see for hours.
Lakewood police confirmed the billboard was physically accessed through its internal modem.
Sgt. Charles Porche stated the hack was carried out by “someone with an agenda,” but did not elaborate.
“It was way out of left field,” Porche told the Seattle Times. “It was obviously someone with an agenda.”
The sign was immediately shut down, and an investigation is underway with the billboard vendor.
The perpetrator responsible for the billboard hack remains unidentified, and no suspects have been publicly identified.
KOMO News reports:
Property management at Lakewood Towne Center told KOMO News they’re working with authorities to try to find out who’s responsible, and they’re still investigating how the signs were hacked in the first place.
The billboard remained off for about two days while property managers worked with their partners to ensure it couldn’t be hacked again, but by Thursday afternoon, the problem had been resolved and the billboard was back in working order.
