Mahmoud Khalil arrested at Columbia University
It appears that there is much more about Mahmoud Khalil than we realized.
Khalil is not your average Hamas supporter from the Gaza.
Khalil was arrested around 8 PM on Saturday, March 8 in the lobby of his apartment building in New York.
Khalil worked at the British Embassy in Beirut, where he supported diplomats with his language skills and local knowledge.
Khalil had a security clearance from the British government! The program he worked on is affiliated with a “flagship UK soft power policy.”
Khalil then immigrated to New York City in 2022 on a student visa to attend the Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA).
SIPA is known is well-known for preparing students for careers in fields related to international affairs, public policy, and security, which often include intelligence-related positions. The CIA is linked to SIPA and finds future agents at this school.
Here is Mahmoud Khalil’s Wikipedia page.
Khalil was born in a refugee camp in Damascus, Syria in 1995[16][17] to Palestinian refugees from Tiberias.[18] He and his family fled to Lebanon in 2012 after the onset of the Syrian civil war.[16][19] Journalist Lauren Bohn, who met Khalil in Beirut while reporting on the Syrian refugee crisis, said Khalil “often referred to himself as a ‘double refugee’ as a Palestinian in Syria and a Syrian refugee in Lebanon”.[16] Bohn reported that Khalil taught himself English while working with Syrian refugees through the Syrian-American education nonprofit Junsoor.[16] Simultaneously, he earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the Lebanese American University in Beirut.[16][18]
Khalil then spent years working for the British government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, managing the Chevening Scholarship from the British embassy in Beirut and supporting diplomats with his language skills and local knowledge.[19] In 2022, he immigrated to the U.S. on a student visa to attend SIPA.[20]
It is interesting that there is NO LINK to SIPA in Wikipedia. You have to look that up yourself.
SIPA is the Columbia School of International and Public Affairs.
According to Grok AI SIPA well-regarded for preparing students for careers in fields related to international affairs, public policy, and security, which often include intelligence-related positions. Its reputation stems from its rigorous academic programs, extensive career support, and strong connections with employers, including government agencies like the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) that recruit for intelligence roles.
More — The school’s Career Advancement Center (CAC) actively facilitates opportunities by posting thousands of internships and jobs annually, including positions with organizations like the CIA, which is listed among the employers recruiting SIPA students. Additionally, SIPA’s location in New York City and its faculty—comprising scholars and former practitioners, including ex-government officials—enhance its appeal to students aiming for intelligence-related roles.
It appears Mahmoud Khalil is a trained asset for British intelligence. This ought to get interesting.
We will continue to follow this story.
