Peacemaker Orbán Talks on the Phone With Russia’s Putin – Hungarian PM Floats Christmas Ceasefire, Massive Prisoner Exchange – Ukraine’s Zelensky Harshly Criticizes Him

The Hungarian rotating Presidency of the EU is ending this month, but Conservative Hero, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is still going at it with full enthusiasm.

A mere two days after going to Mar-a-Lago, Florida to talk with President-Elect Donald J. Trump – with the presence of Elon Musk – Orbán held a telephone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, to talk about his peace plans for Ukraine.

Politico reported:

“’I had an hour-long phone conversation this morning with President Putin’, Orbán wrote on social media. ‘These are the most dangerous weeks of the Russia Ukraine War. We are taking every possible diplomatic step to argue in favor of a ceasefire and peace talks’, he added.”

I had an hour-long phone conversation this morning with President Putin. These are the most dangerous weeks of the #RussiaUkraineWar. We are taking every possible diplomatic step to argue in favour of a ceasefire and #peace talks.

The Kremlin issued a statement confirming the phone call, initiated by Budapest.

“According to the Kremlin, Orbán expressed interest in ‘promoting a joint search’ for political and diplomatic ways to resolve the war in Ukraine, while Putin said Kyiv is preventing ‘the possibility of a peaceful settlement of the conflict’.”

While Orbán has just been with Trump, he was not carrying any messages from the MAGA leader.

“However, according to Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov, the Hungarian leader did not deliver any messages from Trump, and he also denied that Orbán and Putin discussed a possible meeting in the future.”

Needless to say, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was NOT pleased.

“We all hope that @PM_ViktorOrban at least won’t call Assad in Moscow to listen to his hour-long lectures as well. It’s absolutely clear that achieving real peace and guaranteed security requires America’s determination, Europe’s unity, and the unwavering commitment of all partners to the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter. No one should boost personal image at the expense of unity; everyone should focus on shared success. Unity in Europe has always been key to achieving it. There can be no discussions about the war that Russia wages against Ukraine without Ukraine.”

At the end of the Hungarian EU Presidency, we made new efforts for peace. We proposed a Christmas ceasefire and a large-scale prisoner exchange. It’s sad that President @ZelenskyyUa clearly rejected and ruled this out today. We did what we could! https://t.co/17f4tXJEsc
