Former President Barack Obama has walked back his casual claim that aliens are “real” during an interview on a progressive podcast.
Obama was asked about extraterrestrial life during a rapid-fire interview on the podcast No Lie with Brian Tyler Cohen released over the weekend.
“Are aliens real?” the host asked.
Obama replied, “They’re real, but I haven’t seen them, and they’re not being kept in — what is it? There’s no underground facility, unless there’s this enormous conspiracy and they hid it from the president of the United States.”
The clip spread like wildfire online, as people have long wondered what presidents actually know about life on other planets.
On Sunday, Obama posted the viral clip on Instagram and wrote, “I was trying to stick with the spirit of the speed round, but since it’s gotten attention let me clarify. Statistically, the universe is so vast that the odds are good there’s life out there. But the distances between solar systems are so great that the chances we’ve been visited by aliens is low, and I saw no evidence during my presidency that extraterrestrials have made contact with us. Really!”

President Donald Trump has repeatedly said the topic is one of the most common questions he receives and has voiced support for greater transparency, though he himself is not a believer in aliens.
In 2019, President Trump told ABC News, “I did have one very brief meeting on it… People are saying they’re seeing UFOs. Do I believe it? Not particularly.” He told Tucker Carlson later the same year, “Personally, I tend to doubt it. I’m not a believer, but you know, I guess anything is possible.”
Though he is skeptical, Trump has also said there are things happening that cannot be explained.
In 2024, during an interview on Logan Paul’s Impaulsive podcast in June 2024, Trump said he had met with pilots who reported having seen “things you wouldn’t believe.”
“But I have met with people, serious people, who say there are some really strange things flying around out there,” Trump said.
When asked if he has access to files about extraterrestrial life, Trump confirmed that he does.
“I have access…and I speak to people about it, I’ve had actually meetings on it,” also saying he had heard of unidentified flying objects that are “round in form, going like four times faster than my super jet fighter plane.”
