Terrifying bodycam footage emerged this week showing the moment an NYPD officer shot a person in self-defense, prompting an outlandish reaction from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
As Fox News reported, the NYPD on Tuesday released video of an incident that occurred in Queens on January 26. Cops were responding to an emergency call from a family, who said 22-year-old Jabez Chakraborty was having a mental health episode and had thrown a glass against the wall.
The footage begins with two police officers calmly approaching the home and knocking on the door. A woman answers and invites them in.
The footage then shows an officer entering the living room of the home, where a man was holding a knife. The person was later identified as 22-year-old Jabez Chakraborty.
Officers repeatedly order him to “put the knife down,” but Chakraborty ignores their demands.
The woman also attempts to hold Chakraborty back, but he continues to move towards the police. An officer then slams a door shut to block the crazed man.
He continues to scream for Chakraborty to put the knife down.
Chakraborty then barges through the door and marches toward the officer with his weapon. Fearing for his life, the officer fires his gun, hitting Chakraborty four times.

Chakraborty was later taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he remains in intensive care. He is in stable but critical condition.
Mamdani weighed in on the incident during a press conference on Tuesday, calling for no charges to be filed against Chakraborty.
In viewing this footage, it is clear to me that what Jabez needs is mental health treatment, not criminal prosecution from a district attorney, and we are talking about a family that is enduring the kind of pain that no family should and an individual that has lived with schizophrenia for many years,” Mamdani said.
“A person experiencing a mental health episode does not always have to be served first or exclusively by a police officer. It is important for us to have all of the options available,” he continued.
Mamdani added that he had met with Chakraborty’s family and the suspect.

Chakraborty’s family slammed the NYPD in a statement Wednesday, accusing them of “escalating” the situation. At the same time, they absolved Chakraborty of all blame.
“Rather than de-escalate the situation, the officer instead further escalated by drawing his gun and yelling orders at Jabez,” the family wrote. “Within a minute of the NYPD’s arrival, Jabez was shot multiple times and almost killed, while he was calmly eating food just minutes earlier.”
