GOP Indiana Congressman Jim Baird, 80, and his wife were severely injured in a car accident.
Baird’s office said the lawmaker’s vehicle was struck.
“Today, the Office of Congressman Jim Baird (IN-04) released the following statement to provide an update on Congressman Baird’s recovery after his vehicle was struck in an accident,” Baird’s office said in a statement.
“Congressman Baird is in the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, and he is extraordinarily grateful for everyone’s prayers during this time. Congressman Baird looks forward to continuing his work on behalf of Hoosiers. The Office of Congressman Baird will continue to provide services and support for those who need it. Congressman Baird and his office remain steadfast in their commitment to serving constituents and focused on advocating for Hoosiers at the highest levels of government.”
According to Fox News, Baird is in stable condition.
Fox News reported:
Rep. Jim Baird, R-Ind., has been hospitalized after a car accident, Fox News has learned.
Baird, 80, is responsive and in stable condition, Fox News sources said.
Details about the incident remain unclear, although President Donald Trump said that the incident was “pretty bad” and that Baird’s wife was also injured.
Baird, known on Capitol Hill for veterans and farming issues, has represented Indiana’s 4th Congressional District since 2019. The district is a largely rural, agriculture-heavy area in western and north-central Indiana.
A U.S. Army veteran who served during the Vietnam War, Baird later became a veterinarian and entered politics after decades in private practice.
Before entering Congress, Baird served as a member of the Indiana House of Representatives from 2010 to 2018 and as a Putnam County commissioner before that, from 2006 to 2010.
President Trump said Baird’s accident was ‘pretty bad’ in remarks to Republicans at the Trump-Kennedy Center on Tuesday morning.
“I also want to send our best wishes to Congressman Jim Baird and his wife, who were recovering from a car accident,” Trump said. “They’re going to be okay, but they had a pretty bad accident, and we’re praying that they get out of that hospital very quickly.”
News of the car accident comes after GOP Rep. Doug LaMalfa of California died suddenly.
LaMalfa’s death, Marjorie Taylor Greene’s resignation, and Baird’s hospitalization narrowed the Republican majority as the 2026 midterms get underway.
