Active Shooter Neutralized at Idaho Sheriff’s Office, Two Civilians and a Dispatcher Shot

An active shooter opened fire near the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office and Courthouse in Idaho on Friday, injuring three people before being fatally shot by law enforcement.

The incident began around 2:30 p.m. local time, with reports of multiple gunshots ringing out in downtown Wallace, a community of about 1,000 residents in northern Idaho.

Witnesses described hearing a “barrage” of gunfire as the suspect, armed with multiple weapons, fired into nearby businesses including an Ace Hardware store across the street from the sheriff’s office.

Staff at the hardware store were reportedly forced into lockdown, hiding in the basement as bullets shattered windows.

The shooter then moved into the county building, which houses the sheriff’s office, courthouse, and jail. He barricaded himself in the inmate visitation room, prompting an immediate and massive response from multiple agencies.

Authorities evacuated the courthouse and established a perimeter around the area.

The Idaho Transportation Department blocked the eastbound ramp to I-90 Exit 62 near Wallace to facilitate the response and ensure public safety.

A life-support helicopter was dispatched, and SWAT teams from Kootenai County, along with officers from Idaho State Police, FBI, Coeur d’Alene Police, Kellogg PD, Pinehurst Police, Osburn Police, and even neighboring Mineral County in Montana, converged on the scene.

Efforts to contact newly sworn-in Shoshone County Sheriff William Eddy were initially unsuccessful amid the chaos.

By approximately 4:45 p.m., the suspect was “neutralized” by law enforcement, with officials later confirming he was dead.

Three people were injured: two civilians and one dispatcher.

“The two bystanders were outside of the sheriff’s office, and reportedly sustained gunshot wounds to their legs. Both victims were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The dispatcher was shot in the ear while stationed in the sheriff’s office lobby, and was also hospitalized with minor injuries,” local station KHQ reports.
