‘Deeply Upset’ Danish Authorities Summon US Ambassador After Trump Appoints Jeff Landry as Greenland Envoy, and Says About the Artic Island: ‘We Have To Have It’

US President Donald J. Trump and Louisiana Governor (now also Greenland Envoy) Jeff Landry.

Trump and Landry are rocking Denmark and Greenland.

The Kingdom of Denmark is reeling after US President appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as his Greenland, as Margaret Flavin reported yesterday here on TGP.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said yesterday (22) that Trump’s decision ‘signals sustained American interest in the Arctic island’.

Reuters reported:

“The appointment confirms the continued American interest in Greenland. However, we insist that everyone – including the U.S. – must show respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark,” Rasmussen said in an emailed statement.”

But it’s not like Trump is denying it, either.

BBC reported:

“In response to a question from the BBC about the new role of Jeff Landry, the Republican governor of Louisiana, Trump said the US needed Greenland for ‘national protection’ and that ‘we have to have it’.”

Landry is expected to ‘lead the charge’ to get the semi-autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

“Gov Landry said in a post on X that it was an honor to serve in a ‘volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the US’.”

Thank you @realDonaldTrump! It’s an honor to serve you in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the U.S. This in no way affects my position as Governor of Louisiana!

CNN reported:

“Denmark’s foreign minister on Monday said he was ‘deeply upset’ by US President Donald Trump’s appointment of a special envoy to Greenland who openly declared that he wished to see the island become part of the United States.

[…] ‘I am deeply upset by this appointment of a special envoy. And I ‌am particularly upset by his statements, which we find completely unacceptable’, Lars Løkke Rasmussen told Denmark’s national broadcaster TV 2, according to Reuters news agency.”

Denmark responded by the usual diplomatic ways.

Axios reported:

“U.S. ambassador to Denmark Ken Howery was summoned to the foreign ministry in Copenhagen on Monday after President Trump’s newly appointed envoy for Greenland called for making the island part of the U.S., according to Danish officials.

[…] Landry has previously backed Washington’s push for jurisdiction over Greenland, writing in January: “We need to ensure that Greenland joins the United States.”

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said the appointment was unacceptable, stressed he was upset by Landry’s comments, and summoned the U.S. ambassador in protest.”
