On Sunday, President Trump announced the appointment of Republican Governor of Louisiana Jeff Landry as the United States Special Envoy to Greenland.
The President wrote on Truth Social, “I am pleased to announce that I am appointing the GREAT Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, as the United States Special Envoy to Greenland. Jeff understands how essential Greenland is to our National Security, and will strongly advance our Country’s Interests for the Safety, Security, and Survival of our Allies, and indeed, the World. Congratulations Jeff!”
Landry publicly thanked the Trump noting, “Thank you @realDonaldTrump! It’s an honor to serve you in this volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the U.S. This in no way affects my position as Governor of Louisiana!”

The announcement sparked a significant amount of international backlash.
Reuters reports:
“You cannot annex another country. Not even with an argument about international security,” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said in a joint statement.
“Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders and the U.S. shall not take over Greenland.”
Nielsen added on Facebook: “We have woken up again to a new announcement from the U.S. president. This may sound big, but it does not change anything for us. We decide our own future.”
Before President Trump was even sworn in for his second term on Jan. 20, his son Don Jr. and Charlie Kirk of Turning Point USA landed in Greenland on Jan. 7 to express America’s interest in the Danish territory.
Last Spring, CNN reported that the Trump administration was eyeing a shift in US security interests in Greenland.
“Trump administration officials are weighing a change that would shift responsibility for US security interests in Greenland to the military command that oversees America’s homeland defense, underscoring the president’s focus on the strategically important territory that he has repeatedly said he wants to acquire, three sources familiar with the deliberations told CNN.”
This change would put Greenland into US Northern Command area of responsibility.

Usha Vance, the wife of Vice President JD Vance, also traveled to Greenland with her son and an American delegation for a three-day visit.
The White House said at the time, “On Thursday, March 27, 2025, Second Lady Usha Vance will travel to Greenland with her son and a United States delegation to visit historical sites, learn about Greenlandic heritage, and attend the Avannaata Qimussersu, Greenland’s national dogsled race.
