Imported Violence: Bellevue Police Officer Lured Into Ambush and Stabbed by Sierra Leone National

Another horrifying reminder of the dangers faced daily by America’s law enforcement officers unfolded last week in deep-blue Washington state, where a Bellevue police officer was viciously ambushed and stabbed after being deliberately lured to the scene by a fraudulent 911 call.

According to King County prosecutors, 38-year-old Mohamed Bangura, who goes by the name “Jude” from Sierra Leone, orchestrated a calculated attack on Bellevue Police officers at the Bellevue Transit Center on Friday afternoon, according to the Seattle Times.

Bangura now faces multiple felony assault charges after allegedly using a bogus domestic violence report to draw officers into a deadly trap.

Prosecutors say Bangura placed a 911 call just before 12:30 p.m., refusing to identify himself and claiming an argument between a man and a woman was escalating at the transit center.

He urged dispatchers to send “an officer or two,” then abruptly disconnected. When 911 operators attempted to call back, the phone went straight to voicemail.

Eight minutes later, Bellevue Police Officers Sean Winebrenner and Guilherme Spagnolo arrived on scene, unaware they were walking into a premeditated ambush.

Body-worn camera footage reviewed by investigators shows the officers calmly engaging Bangura, who confirmed he was the one who placed the call.

There was no aggressive behavior, no raised voices, and no indication of danger, until Bangura suddenly pulled a knife from his jacket.

Without warning, Bangura lunged at Officer Spagnolo with a five-inch kitchen knife. Spagnolo narrowly dodged the downward stabbing motion.

Bangura then turned on Officer Winebrenner, slashing him across the face and knocking him to the ground.

As Winebrenner lay defenseless, Bangura stabbed him twice in the back and shoulder area.

Winebrenner suffered a dislocated shoulder, a broken collarbone, and severe facial injuries. He was rushed to Harborview Medical Center and later discharged Saturday.

Officer Spagnolo, acting to stop the deadly attack and save his partner’s life, fired his service weapon six times, striking Bangura three times. Bangura was transported to Harborview, where he remains in intensive care with gunshot wounds to his arm, leg, and torso.

Prosecutors have charged Bangura with first-degree assault for the attack on Officer Winebrenner and second-degree assault for the attempted stabbing of Officer Spagnolo.

Senior Deputy Prosecutor Daniel Merrick wrote in charging papers:

“Instead of letting that complaint process play out, he chose to arm himself with a knife and assault two other innocent, unwitting officers who thought they were responding to a call of domestic violence.”

Merrick requested $5 million bail, citing the deliberate nature of the attack.

Investigators later confirmed that both 911 calls, the initial complaint, and the fake domestic disturbance came from the same phone number.

As is typical in Washington state, the public has been provided no mugshot, thanks to policies that shield criminals while law-abiding citizens and police officers pay the price.
