WATCH: Arizona’s Newest Democrat Claims ICE Agents Are “Masked Men” Taking Babies
Rep. Adelita Grijalva wasted no time turning her swearing-in ceremony into a hyper-partisan spectacle, using her very first speech on the House floor to launch one of the most extreme and dishonest attacks on federal law enforcement in recent memory.
Instead of outlining a vision for Arizona’s 7th District or reassuring constituents who went 50 days without representation, Grijalva chose to smear ICE agents as “masked” kidnappers ripping babies from their parents.
Her remarks came moments after she took the oath of office, following a prolonged and unprecedented delay in her seating due to the Democrats’ decision to shut down the government.
Rather than address the concerns of more than 800,000 Arizonans who had been left without basic constituent services, Grijalva opened her tenure by painting the United States as a country defined by brutality rather than opportunity.
“Babies are being ripped away from their parents by masked agents,” she declared—a claim designed to shock, not inform.
With that line, Grijalva suggested that ICE operates as a rogue paramilitary force, a narrative that is as irresponsible as it is false.
ICE agents are not “masked men” terrorizing communities. They are federal officers who dismantle human-trafficking networks, arrest violent criminals, and enforce immigration laws passed by Congress itself.
Grijalva’s rhetoric undermines trust in law enforcement, spreads fear among immigrant communities, and ignores the reality that many of those “masked” operations she describes target cartel-linked smugglers and child-exploitation suspects.
Grijalva simultaneously celebrated her own family’s journey—her grandfather immigrating for opportunity, her father rising from labor work to Congress—while portraying America as a dystopia where families are hunted in the night by government agents.
Her speech rejected the country that made her rise possible in favor of the far-left narrative that the United States is defined by oppression.
She also used the moment to accuse the Trump administration of attacking basic freedoms, driving up healthcare costs, and covering up Epstein-related evidence—again offering no specifics, no legislative solutions, and no acknowledgment of bipartisan responsibility.
It was pure political theater.
Grijalva capped the speech by signing a discharge petition to force the release of Epstein files, a dramatic flourish clearly intended to generate headlines rather than concrete governance.
For Arizona’s 7th District, this should have been a fresh start—an end to weeks of political chaos.
Instead, the public watched a newly sworn-in member of Congress begin her service with a reckless attack on federal officers and an emotionally charged script tailored for cable news, not for serious legislating.
If Grijalva’s opening speech is any indication, her time in Congress will be defined not by solutions or leadership, but by sensational claims, partisan hostility, and a deeply disconnected view of the country she was just elected to serve.
