Fox News Reported:
A Miami-Dade deputy was fatally shot during an altercation Friday, leading to a massive police response.
Deputy Devin Jaramillo, 27, was shot while responding to a car crash and was taken to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said at a news conference, adding the deputy was “brutally attacked, and he was murdered.”
“Today is not OK. What happened today in Miami-Dade County and to our deputy was not OK, and today will never be OK,” Cordero-Stutz said. “I ask our community to pray for the family of our fallen deputy, to pray for all of us because we are a family, and we are hurting.”
“The shooting happened shortly before 4 p.m. in the area of a warehouse near Southwest 128th Street and 122nd Avenue as the deputy was responding to a car crash. Bystanders called 911, and deputies responded and gave him first aid before he was rushed to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where he died.” Fox News Reported.
The fatal attack on the Deputy also prompted a strong response from law enforcement. The agencies that got involved included the FBI, the Florida Highway Patrol and the Coral Gables Police Department.
As part of the investigation, law enforcement shut down some nearby roads and blocked off the area where the shooting took place.
According to the Miami Herald, the shooter, 21-year-old Steven David Rustrian, fatally shot himself after killing the deputy.
“Jaramillo, who is assigned to the Kendall District Station, was working the crash when Steven David Rustrian, a 21-year-old involved in the collision, began arguing with him. It’s unclear why, but things quickly escalated to a physical scuffle, she said. Rustrian does not appear to have a criminal record in South Florida, according to court records. Video shared with the Miami Herald showed Jaramillo trying to subdue Rustrian on the ground, the pair rolling around in the grass. As Jaramillo was on top of Rustrian, straddling him, Rustrian grabbed Jaramillo’s gun and shot him several times, the video showed and Cordero-Stutz confirmed,” the Miami Herald reported.
