LA Times reporter Brittny Mejia reported on a Border Patrol operation in LA County with the sensational headline, “Video: Armed agents drive off with child after detaining her father.”
The article breathlessly reports that the man detained was “a U.S. citizen” and that the agents drove off with the toddler strapped into the man’s vehicle after climbing into the car “with their weapons.”
Mejia shared on X, “ICYMI: During a Border Patrol operation outside a Cypress Park Home Depot yesterday, agents detained a U.S. citizen they accused of assault. The agents drove off with his one-year-old daughter in the backseat. She’s since been reunited with her family.”

Buried in the article, after veiled innuendo, Meija noted the man was “arrested for assault and during his arrest a pistol was found in his car, that is reported stolen out of the state of New York.”
A man leaves a baby in a car to attack federal agents swinging a hammer and has a stolen gun and a warrant out, but the legacy media still tries to attack the very agents removing a child from a dangerous situation.
Assistant Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin blasted Meija for her smear.
McLaughlin noted on X, “Oh ffs sake, Brittny.”
“This U.S. citizen left his own child unattended in a car and proceeded to attack law enforcement as the were conducting an operation—he exited his car wielding a hammer and threw rocks at law enforcement as he abandoned his child.”
“He was arrested for assault and during his arrest a pistol was found in his car, that is reported stolen out of the state of New York.”
“He has an individual has an active warrant for property damage.”
“Law enforcement rightly looked over the child until they were in the safe custody of a guardian.”

FOX LA framed the story in a similar manner, blaring on X, “An adult male and a baby were arrested at a Home Depot in Cypress Park.”

Homeland Security responed to FOX LA with additional details on X.
“ASSAULT ON LAW ENFORCEMENT.”
“During a targeted immigration enforcement operation, a U.S. citizen exited his vehicle WIELDING A HAMMER and THREW ROCKS at law enforcement while he had a child in his car.”
“He was arrested for assault and during his arrest a pistol was found in his car, that is reported stolen out of the state of New York. The individual has an active warrant for property damage. We refuse to apologize for enforcing the law.”
“The operation resulted in the arrest of 5 illegal aliens from Mexico and Guatemala who were all breaking our nation’s immigration laws. Their criminal histories include DUI, driving without a license, and previously removal, which is a felony.”
