Former Clackamas County Commissioner Melissa Fireside Credit: Fireside Campaign/Daily Mail
A former Democrat lawmaker from Oregon has apparently taken advantage of soft criminal laws her party has passed over the years and escaped justice.
As The Daily Mail reported, 44-year-old Melissa Fireside crossed the U.S. border with her young son after her former partner discovered she had taken the 9-year-old out of school last Wednesday.
She then booked a flight from Mexico to Amsterdam. It’s unclear whether she is residing in the Dutch city.
Fireside, who served as a Clackamas County Commissioner, is accused of trying to scam her mother’s 83-year-old boyfriend out of $30,000. She resigned from her role after being charged with fraud.
Fireside was due to stand trial on first-degree theft charges in December. But she fled after being released on bail.
More from the Daily Mail:
Officials found she was no longer living at an address given to bail officers.
She is believed to have had a flight from Mexico to Amsterdam booked for last Thursday.
Fireside, who was only elected to the commissioner role last November, has an Austrian passport that is valid until 2032. Oregon Department of Justice spokesman Jerry Gorman says it was unclear how Fireside was able to obtain that document.
The passport enables its holder to live and move freely between all 27 member states of the European Union, meaning Fireside is not limited to staying in Austria.
The Mail reveals that Fireside allegedly posed as her mother’s boyfriend, Arthur W. Petrone, to obtain a $21,000 bank loan and a $9,000 credit card advance using a forged signature.
Petrone was a retired supermarket worker living in an assisted living facility at the time. He died in August.
Investigators then discovered evidence that Fireside had created an email in Petrone’s name to attempt to secure a $35,000 loan. She was turned down for that amount due to Petrone’s limited finances, but she still received $21,000.
Petrone’s daughter, Lynn Roberts, explained that her dad was in no condition to take out such a large loan.
Fireside allegedly used $29,000 of the stolen cash to pay back a loan to Oregon State Representative April Dobson.
Dobson claimed she agreed to the loan because she felt sympathy for Fireside as “a single mother.”
However, it’s unknown why or whether Fireside needed the cash in the first place. After all, she has a $900,000 home in Lake Oswego, a tony Portland suburb.
Perhaps she had grown so accustomed to ‘legally’ stealing from Oregon taxpayers that she thought she could get away with it the ‘old-fashioned’ way.
