The University of Massachusetts Amherst recently saw its student-run drag club, “UMass is a Drag,” put on a Halloween-themed performance called the “Creature Feature” drag show.
Held in Bartlett Hall on campus, the event featured drag performers, including students identifying as transgender and non-binary, and was open to participants who wanted to dress in drag.
One student involved with the event told the Massachusetts Daily Collegian that performers “would not have the same freedoms and opportunities at other places, and it means a lot that UMass is pro-drag.”
When Campus Reform, a conservative watchdog outlet focused on higher education, reached out for comment, a representative from the drag club responded bluntly: “My personal official statement is you can go f**k yourself.”
Campus Reform reports:
In a promotional post to Instagram shared by the drag club, known as the “UMass is a Drag,” the group stated that the show was the club’s third Halloween drag performance. The UMass Stonewall Center is listed as the supporter the drag show.
In one of several videos featuring drag performer “Hexplode Von Zarobitch” at the event, the individual can be seen posing and dancing in front of a crowd of applauding students.
In response to Campus Reform’s request for comment, a representative for the “UMass is a Drag” club said: “My personal official statement is you can go f**k yourself.”
UMass Amherst, a public university, continues to facilitate these events amid broader debates about cultural programming on taxpayer-funded campuses.
