Federal authorities are investigating the discovery of more than 300 piles of cremated human remains dumped in the Nevada desert near the small town of Searchlight, about an hour south of Las Vegas.

The remains were first discovered in late July by a local man exploring the area, who found hundreds of small piles scattered across the desert floor, each believed to represent the ashes of an individual.

Officials later confirmed the material was human cremains, the pulverized bone that remains after cremation.

According to local media, workers from Palm Mortuaries and Cemeteries stepped in this week to recover the remains.

Workers collected around 315 piles over the course of the operation, placing each one into its own bag and transferring them to individual urns.

A second dumping site was also discovered nearby, suggesting the problem may be larger than first believed.

Although Nevada law allows individuals to scatter ashes on public land, funeral homes and cremation providers are legally obliged to treat all remains with dignity.

Federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) policy also permits scattering by private citizens but prohibits the commercial dumping of cremated remains.

Officials, therefore, believe this large-scale disposal likely violates federal law.

“I think most of us just felt like, ‘What a shame,’” Celena DiLullo, president of Palm Mortuaries and Cemeteries, told FOX 16.

“I don’t know if it was the wishes of these people to be out, so that’s kind of what goes through my mind. If this is not how they would want to be remembered, we would just want to have a place for them to be.”

None of the piles contained identification tags or documents, and investigators say any identifying material that once existed, such as urn fragments or plastic zip ties used to seal cremation bags, had deteriorated or been discarded.

Authorities suspect a funeral business may be responsible, although they have yet to identify potential culprits.

Palm Mortuaries has committed to placing all 315 sets of remains in a cemetery crypt, allowing family members to locate them in the future.

Federal investigators continue to search for whoever dumped the ashes and to determine whether criminal charges will be filed.
