The point is not to do things anew, but to do them like no one has ever done before. In this case, to legislate like no one has ever done. Those were the words of Ecuador’s president, Daniel Noboa, at the National Assembly when he took office. He quoted the German writer Goethe, author of the epic work Faust.
Ecuador came from a socialist period where the tyrant in charge was unable to speak English: “Because is nice. Because is handsome. Because is incredible.” And he pretended to speak Quechua, but did so very poorly.
Now, Ecuador has a president who speaks fluent English, French, and some German, who was in the front row with world leaders at the Vatican, next to Trump, next to the Kings of Spain, and who in his inaugural speech quoted his father, in the midst of a society and movement that belittles the paternal figure.
He reaped what his father sowed for years, and that is how he reached the presidency.
