SPECIAL ENVOYS MEET: Russia’s Kirill Dmitriev Reportedly Heads to Washington To Meet Steve Witkoff and Advance Normalization of Diplomatic Ties Between the Two Nuclear Superpowers

It’s hard to stomach the gleeful reports in the USAID-media openly celebrating the difficulties faced by the Trump team in getting Russians and Ukrainians to agree to a cease-fire and subsequent negotiations for a permanent peace settlement.

We’ve written here in TGP that the media mockingbirds were going to pivot from ‘peace talks are impossible and will never take place’ to ‘negotiations are taking too long’.

While the obstacles for a peace in Ukraine are very real, the wider détente between the two nuclear powers, US and Russia, is advancing – and that’s consequential progress.

Reports have arisen that Vladimir Putin’s special envoy Kirill Dmitriev is to visit Washington this week, to hold a meeting with Trump representative Steven Witkoff.

If confirmed, Dmitriev will be the first senior Russian official to visit Washington since the onset of the war in 2022.

Maybe.

The resistance to US–Russia dialogue is real—driven by entrenched interests and old narratives.

But what if improved relations are exactly what the world needs for lasting global security and peace ️?#Geopolitics #USRussia #Peace #GlobalSecurity https://t.co/U3ungjB21Z

Reuters reported:

“Kirill Dmitriev, the chief of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund, who was appointed by President Vladimir Putin as special investment and international economic envoy, will meet with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, one source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Another source said that Dmitriev will meet Witkoff on Wednesday.”

Russian Special Envoy Kirill Dmitriev.

Witkoff and Dmitriev are to hold talks about ‘strengthening relations between the two countries’ as they seek to end the war in Ukraine.

The work to improve the currently limited diplomatic relations comes after recent telephone calls between the Trump and Putin – but of course the Reuters report has to focus on ‘the lack of progress’ on the ceasefire in Ukraine.

“But as Trump appears to be growing increasingly impatient with what he has suggested might be Moscow’s foot-dragging over a wider Ukraine peace deal and saying he was ‘pissed off’ with Putin, Dmitriev’s trip may also de-escalate some of the tensions.

As Dmitriev is still under U.S. sanctions, CNN reported that the Trump administration temporarily lifted the sanctions for his visit.”
