Steve Bannon: President Trump Will Run and Win in 2028, We’re Working On It Now

Former White House chief strategist Steven K. Bannon, arguably the leader of the MAGA movement’s grassroots right wing, has confidently asserted that President Donald Trump will ultimately find a way to circumvent America’s constitutional two-term limit and seek re-election in 2028.

Bannon, host of the highly influential War Room podcast, made this controversial statement during an interview with former CNN anchor Chris Cuomo on NewsNation on Wednesday, March 19.

Although the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution clearly prohibits any individual from being elected to the presidency more than twice, Bannon nonetheless asserts that Trump could potentially secure a third term.

“I’m a firm believer that President Trump will run again in 2028. I’ve already endorsed President Trump,” Bannon, the media executive, political strategist, and former investment bank, stated.

A man like Trump, Bannon continued, “comes along once every century if we’re lucky. We’ve got him now. He’s on fire, I’m a huge supporter, and I would like to see him again in 2028.”

When questioned by Cuomo how Trump might circumvent the constitutional restriction on a third term, Bannon simply responded: “We’re working on it.”

Continuing, the former Breitbart News chairman said: “I think we’ll have a couple of alternatives, let’s say that. We’ll see what the definition of term limit is. We’ve had greater longshots than Trump 2028. We’ve got a lot of stuff we’re working on. We’re not prepared to talk about it publicly.”

Cuomo then asked Bannon to clarify whether he was referring to “litigating this issue” rather than orchestrating an insurrection, to which Bannon responded, “No. We are strong believers in democracy.”

This is not the first instance in which Bannon has implied that Trump could secure a third term. During his speech at CPAC last month, Bannon told the audience, “The future of MAGA is Donald Trump. We want Trump in ’28.”

During a speech at the New York Young Republican Club’s annual gala in December 2024, Bannon argued that the Constitution “doesn’t actually say consecutive” and as a result Trump could “do it again in ’28.”

President Trump, for his part, has joked several times about the possibility of serving more than two terms. During a rally with his supporters in Nevada earlier this year, he remarked, seemingly in jest, “It will be the greatest honor of my life to serve, not once but twice or three times or four times.”

Others, like Bannon and Republican Congressman Andy Ogles, are more serious about Trump serving a third term. Ogles, who has proposed an amendemnet to the Constitution to allow prsidents who haven’t served two consecutive terms to serve three terms in total, has formed a think-tank, called “The Third Term Project,” dedicated to making it a reality.

Others, such as Bannon and Republican Congressman Andy Ogles, approach the prospect of Trump serving a third term with greater seriousness. Ogles, who has proposed a constitutional amendment to allow presidents who haven’t served two consecutive terms to serve a total of three terms, has also founded a think tank called “The Third Term Project” to advocate for and work toward this goal.

“It is imperative that we provide President Trump with every resource necessary to correct the disastrous course set by the Biden administration,” Ogles said in January

The two-term limit was introduced in the US Constitution in 1951 after Franklin D. Roosevelt broke the precedent by serving four terms in office. Prior to Roosevelt’s presidency, most presidents had served either one or two terms.
