Police Officer Killed in Shooting at Pennsylvania Hospital

A police officer was killed while responding to an active shooter at a Pennsylvania hospital on Saturday morning.

West York Borough Police announced Officer Andrew Duarte was killed while responding to a shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital in West Manchester Township.

“Our West York Borough family is suffering a painful loss today in response to a tragic mutual aid call earlier today in West Manchester Township at UPMC,” the police department said in a post on Facebook.

“Our hearts break at the innocent loss of life.”

The post continued, “Our prayers and deepest condolences go out to West York Borough Police Officer, Andrew Duarte’s family and all of our brothers and sisters in the West York Borough Police Department that have lost a comrade and friend, and furthermore our fellow Borough agencies that have lost a colleague. Our community grieves the loss of a hero.”

“At this time, the shooter is deceased, and there is no danger to the public,” State Police said in a press release.

The shooter’s name has not been publicly released at this time.

No patients were injured during the incident.

The state police said the “hospital is now secure.”

In a statement posted to X, Gov. Josh Shapiro said, “The loss of West York Borough PD Officer Andrew Duarte in today’s incident is truly heartbreaking. My thoughts are with his family, colleagues in the department and county, and all who knew and loved him.”

According to a report from USA Today, “Prior to serving in the West York Borough Police Department, Duarte worked at the Denver Police Department, a spokesperson for the Colorado department confirmed to USA TODAY. In 2021, Duarte received an award in Colorado from Mothers Against Drunk Driving, according to a Colorado Department of Transportation announcement.”
