Estefania McDonald Rodriguez’s posts led to the arrest of her husband Luis Grijalba.
Our modern world’s obsession with splashing our lives for public consumption on social media can become quite problematic, especially if you are wanted by the US DOJ.
That’s exactly the case for this fugitive drug cartel chief, who was arrested in London after his wife’s social media posts about their holidays gave away his location.
The Telegraph reported:
“Luis Grijalba, wanted in the US on charges of exporting cocaine from Costa Rica, was arrested by British police after a tip-off from their American counterparts, who had been monitoring photographs of their travels posted by Estefania McDonald Rodriguez, his wife.”

The UK’s National Crime Agency detained Grijalba near the London Bridge, after the he arrived with his wife in London on a luxury holiday to celebrate the New Year.
“The US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) had been able to follow Grijalba’s movements through posts from Ms. Rodriguez that included snaps of the couple posing in front of the Eiffel Tower.
She had also posted pictures of herself in front of Rome’s Trevi Fountain, in a gondola in Venice, and crossing a river in Japan.”
Rodriguez postings of romantic moments around the world with her husband Luis Grijalba have cost him his freedom.
She is a supervisor at a beauty salon in Costa Rica’s port city of Limón.
On a post of picture from Rome, she wrote that ‘a trip is lived 3 times: when we dream it, when we live it, when we remember it’.
“Her Instagram account, which had 21,000 followers, has since been deleted, though her Facebook account – where many of the photographs were posted – remains open.”
Randall Zúñiga, from Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Agency, noted that Grijalba’s wife was a lot less cautious than him in hiding their movements.
“’His wife travelled out of the country a lot and posted about it on social media’, Zuñiga said. ‘They went to Colombia and Europe a lot. They had recorded several trips. She uploaded a lot of photos’.”
Grijalba is fighting extradition to the US, where he will face a long prison sentence if convicted.
The cartel chief has survived two assassination attempts back in Costa Rica. On one instance he had to behind a tree, while seven members of his gang were killed.
