Germany’s President Dissolves Parliament and Calls Snap Elections – Then Issues a Warning to Elon Musk

Germany will join the list of countries headed to the polls next year.

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said in a speech on Friday that he had dissolved the country’s parliament and a snap election would take place in February.

“I have decided to dissolve the 20th German Bundestag to fix the date for an early election for February 23rd,” he said, adding that “political stability in Germany is a precious asset.”

“It is precisely in difficult times like these that stability requires a government capable of taking action and a reliable majority in parliament,” he continued.

“Therefore, I am convinced that for the good of our country, new elections are the right way.”

Steinmeier also publicly attacked the influence of Elon Musk,  declaring that the campaign must be “conducted with fair and transparent means” and warning of the dangers “foreign influence… which is particularly intense on X.”

“Hatred and violence must have no place in this election campaign, nor denigration or intimidation… all this is poison for democracy,” he continued.

His comments come after Musk repeatedly declared his support for the conservative Alternative for Germany Party (AfD), which is the only mainstream political party standing on a platform of conservative and anti-globalist ideas.

The announcement comes just days after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz lost a confidence vote following the collapse of his deeply unpopular and fractious three-party coalition.

The vote also took place a month after he dismissed his finance minister during a contentious dispute over strategies to revive Germany’s sluggish economy.

The election presents an opportunity for the AFD to make further gains across the country, as voters express their outrage at the mass immigration that has undermined the fabric of German society.

According to the latest poll, the centrist Christian Democratic Union will likely top the poll with 31 percent of the vote, while the conservative AFD is in second place on 19.5 percent.

Meanwhile, the ruling Social Democratic Party is languishing at just 16 percent, followed by the Greens at 12.5 percent. A mix of other smaller parties are polling in single figures.
